Pool Repair Costs: A Price Guide to the Most Common Repairs

Pool repair cost depends far more on what has failed than on how big your pool is. A cracked skimmer box and a structural crack under the waterline are both “pool repairs”, but one is a day’s work and the other can mean draining the pool. So the most useful thing we can give you is a price range for each common repair, and an honest list of what pushes a quote up.

Every figure below is a rough guide at the time of writing, based on South African prices and the work our team does. The real number for your pool comes after we’ve found the fault, so ask us for a current quote before you budget.

What Makes a Pool Repair Cost More

Two pools with the same symptom can end up with very different quotes. These are the things that move the number:

  • Finding the fault. A leak you can see is cheap to fix. A leak you can’t see has to be found first.
  • Digging. A pipe under lawn is quick to reach. A pipe under paving, a patio or a driveway isn’t.
  • Draining. Repairs below the waterline often mean emptying the pool, and refilling costs money and water.
  • Surface area. Anything to do with the pool finish is priced by area, not by volume.
  • Access. Materials carried through a house or up steps take longer.
  • Parts. Older equipment and fittings may need adapting because exact parts aren’t made any more.
  • The cause. If ground movement, roots or poor drainage caused the damage, fixing only the symptom won’t last.

Bundling repairs helps. If the pool has to be drained for one job, it’s the cheapest time to do the others on the list.

Pool Leak Repair Costs

Leaks are the repair people put off longest, and the one that gets more expensive the longer it waits. Water escaping into the ground softens the soil under paving and coping and can move the shell itself.

Finding the Leak First

Our pool leak detection uses three methods: dye testing around fittings and cracks, electronic listening along the pipes, and pressure testing each line. At the time of writing, dye testing starts from around R900, electronic listening from around R1,500 and pressure testing of the plumbing from around R2,000. Many pools only need one or two of these.

Fixing the Leak

Once it’s found, the repair cost depends on where it is. A leaking light niche, jet or skimmer seal can often be repaired with the water in, from around R2,500. A broken pipe under paving means digging, repairing and making good, and can run past R15,000. Our guide to pool leak repairs explains the common fixes.

A free check you can do today: the bucket test

Put a bucket on the first step and fill it with pool water to the same level as the pool. Mark the water level inside the bucket and on the pool wall. Run the pump as normal and compare after 24 hours.

If the pool has dropped noticeably more than the bucket, you probably have a leak. Hot, windy Cape summer days evaporate a lot of water, so the bucket tells you what’s normal.

Pool Repair Costs for Cracks and Surfaces

Not every crack is a leak. Fine surface crazing in old marbelite is mostly cosmetic. A crack that runs through the shell, especially one that opens and closes with the seasons, is structural and needs proper repair.

Type of damageWhat it usually needsRough cost at the time of writing
Hairline surface crack above the waterlineOpen, fill and sealFrom around R2,500
Structural crack below the waterlineDrain, chase out, bond and sealFrom around R6,000 to R12,000 or more
Hollow or delaminating marbelite patchesChip out and patch, or resurfacePatch quoted on site; resurfacing is a renovation
Fibreglass blisters, cracks or bulgesGrind out, re-laminate and topcoatQuoted after inspection

For the background on causes, see how to fix a crack in a swimming pool properly, and for fibreglass shells our guide to fibreglass pool repairs.

When a Repair Becomes a Renovation

If cracks keep coming back, the marbelite sounds hollow in several places, or the surface is rough and stained all over, patching becomes money spent over and over. At that point resurfacing or relining is the better spend. A fresh coat of pool paint suits a sound surface, while a failing one needs relining or new marbelite. Our pool renovation price guide covers those costs.

Pool Repair Costs for Skimmers, Jets and Valves

The plumbing fittings take a beating from ground movement, sun and age. These are the repairs we see most often:

  • Skimmer box. Cracked skimmers leak behind the coping. Replacing one means cutting out the old box, fitting a new one and making good, from around R3,500 to R6,500 or more. See when to repair or replace a pool skimmer.
  • Return jets. A loose or cracked jet fitting is usually a small job. A leaking pipe behind it is not, so the jet gets pressure tested first. More on replacing pool jets.
  • Multiport valve. A valve that leaks out of the waste line or won’t seal between settings is often cheaper to replace than repair, from around R650 to R1,500 for the part.
  • Filter. A sand change runs from around R800 to R1,100. A cracked filter tank needs replacing, from around R3,800 to R10,000 fitted.

Pool Repair Cost for Pumps and Lights

We’ve kept pump figures out of this guide on purpose. Our pool pump prices guide covers seals, capacitors, impellers and motors, with a simple rule for repair or replace.

For pool lights, the most common job is swapping a failed halogen lamp for an LED. A retrofit LED lamp starts from around R900, with the electrical work done by a qualified electrician. Our guide to 12V LED pool lights has the full breakdown.

Coping and Edge Repair Costs

Loose or cracked coping is more than cosmetic. Water gets in behind it, and the bond beam underneath starts to suffer. Material ranges from around R250 a metre for concrete coping to R1,500 a metre for travertine, with labour on top. Our pool coping cost guide compares the options.

Which Pool Repairs Can Wait, and Which Can’t

Book it now

  • Water loss well beyond the bucket test
  • Cracks that leak or keep widening
  • Wet ground, sinking paving or a damp wall near the pool
  • A light that trips the earth leakage
  • Loose coping that people step on

Usually fine to plan for

  • Fine surface crazing above the waterline
  • Faded or chalky paint
  • A few stained or rough patches
  • A stiff multiport valve handle
  • Cosmetic chips on tiles

Western Cape Causes Behind Common Repairs

  • Winter groundwater pushes on empty or half-empty pools and opens cracks. Never drain a pool in winter without advice.
  • Tree roots lift paving, crack pipes and push skimmers out of line in older, leafy suburbs.
  • Coastal salt air corrodes light rims, ladder fittings and equipment near the sea.
  • Hard water in parts of the Boland leaves scale in pipes and valves, which wears seals faster.

How to Get an Accurate Pool Repair Quote

  1. Do the bucket test and note how much water the pool loses in 24 hours.
  2. Take photos of the problem area, the pump and filter, and the pool as a whole.
  3. Note when it started and whether it’s worse with the pump on or off.
  4. Ask for the fault to be found and explained before you approve the repair.
  5. Ask what the quote includes: digging, making good, draining and refilling.

Pool Repair Cost Questions

How much does it cost to fix a leaking pool?

At the time of writing, most leak repairs cost from around R2,500 to R15,000 or more. Fittings like jets and skimmer seals sit at the lower end, while broken pipes under paving sit at the top. Finding the leak first is usually a separate cost.

How much does pool leak detection cost?

Dye testing starts from around R900, electronic listening from around R1,500 and pressure testing the plumbing from around R2,000, at the time of writing. Many pools only need one or two methods to find the leak.

How much does it cost to fix a crack in a pool?

A small surface crack above the waterline can be repaired from around R2,500. A structural crack below the waterline, which usually means draining the pool, can cost R6,000 to R12,000 or more.

Can a pool be repaired without draining it?

Many repairs can, including some leak repairs at fittings, skimmer seals, light niches and work on the pump and filter. Structural cracks below the waterline, resurfacing and relining need the pool drained.

Why do pool repair quotes vary so much?

Quotes depend on what has failed, whether anything must be dug up, whether the pool needs draining, access to the site and parts availability. Compare quotes only once the fault has been properly found.

Is it worth repairing an old pool or should I renovate?

If the shell is sound and the fault is one fitting or one crack, repair it. If cracks keep returning and the surface is failing all over, relining or resurfacing usually costs less over time than repeated patching.
