Pool Volume Calculator: How Much Water Is In Your Pool?

Every chemical dose you will ever add depends on one number: how many litres your pool holds. Get it wrong and every dose after it is wrong too.

Here is how to calculate pool volume in litres, with the formulas and a quick reference table.

How to Calculate Pool Volume in Litres

Work in metres, then multiply. One cubic metre is 1,000 litres.

Rectangular pool: length x width x average depth x 1,000 = litres

A pool 8 m by 4 m with an average depth of 1.5 m holds 8 x 4 x 1.5 x 1,000 = 48,000 litres.

Pool Volume Formula for Other Shapes

Pool shapeFormula for volume in litres
RectangularLength x width x average depth x 1,000
Circular3.14 x radius x radius x average depth x 1,000
Oval3.14 x (length / 2) x (width / 2) x average depth x 1,000
Kidney or freeform(Longest length x widest width x 0.85) x average depth x 1,000

Freeform pools are an estimate. If the shape is unusual, measure at several points and take the average.

Working Out Average Depth for Pool Volume

Most pools slope. Do not use the deep end alone, or every dose will be too large.

Add the shallow end depth to the deep end depth and divide by two. A pool 1.0 m shallow and 2.0 m deep has an average depth of 1.5 m.

If the pool has a long flat shallow section and a short deep end, weight it toward the shallow figure.

Most Cape Town family pools land between 30,000 and 60,000 litres.

How Many Litres Is a Swimming Pool on Average?

A standard South African residential pool holds roughly 40,000 to 50,000 litres. A small plunge pool can be as little as 8,000 litres.

Do not rely on the average. A 20% error in volume means a 20% error in every chemical you buy.

Why Accurate Pool Volume Matters for Every Dose

Volume is the input for all of it.

Measure once, write it on the inside of the pump box lid, and use it for years.

Pool Volume Measurement Mistakes to Avoid

  • Measuring to the coping instead of the waterline
  • Using the deep end depth as the average
  • Forgetting that a beach entry or Baja shelf reduces the total
  • Guessing from the pool’s advertised size rather than measuring it
